More deadly politics
And with that, it looks like we’re in for one of the greatest debates over human rights this state, not to mention nation, has ever seen. As NMI reports, the new PAC Repeal the Repeal plans to push to get the issue of capital punishment on the ballot.
Public politics–waged on TV and through GOTV–is significantly different than the every-other-year jockeying in the state legislature. So, let’s see the sides make their cases, 30 seconds at a time. I didn’t start off being against the death penalty….But after 10 years covering it, I haven’t heard a truly strong or valid argument to keep it. From the looks of that TV spot, Repeal the Repeal looks like it’s going to shock voters to reconsider their positions. Will Amnesty International and the ACLU fight back?
If voters put the death penalty back on the books and we do actually execute someone, there will be a hard number of individual citizens with blood on their hands.
Part of me likes the idea of a ballot initiative. I’m not sure whether its legally viable…

People laughed at the guy. They said he couldn’t find oil in an auto parts store. They said he was a drunk and worse. But he was elected Governor of Texas and during his tenure oversaw the execution of more inmates than New Mexico has carried out since the advent of electric chair. He ascended to the Presidency and is considered by experts and laymen alike one of the worst in our history.
Darren White led Bush’s campaign in New Mexico, appearing with campaign attire during TV interviews over local law enforcement issues. He’s not national material, but nobody thought George was, either.
Now he’s combining California’s flawed referendum approach with the bloody subject of execution, hoping to fire up the GOP in NM. It doesn’t matter if the thing ever passes, or even makes it onto the ballot; it’s his vehicle to political salvation after his stomping at the hands of Martin Heinrich.
Sarah Palin reproves that the next fundamentalist lunatic is only an election away from real power. This is New Mexico’s chance to Just Say No to another national embarrassment before he reaches the national stage. Sheriff White is our Geroge W. Bush, our Sarah Palin, and the sooner we send him back to the private sector, the better for our state and our country.
