Avree Update: “Out of the Woods”

By Maassive on July 2nd, 2009

This just in from Dan Koffman, SFR staffer and father of Avree,  the sole surviving teenager involved in the crash Saturday night that left four others dead:

I now feel confident in saying Avree will make an almost full physical recovery and is no longer in danger from her injuries. Her recovery rate is accelerating. We know why she’s not fully awake and we think it will resolve; the sheared nerves in her brain are only in a small area. She has been awake for more and longer periods and is answering questions and asking questions.

Avree was airlifted to University Hospital in Albuquerque. Initially in critical condition, her health has been gradually improving over the week.

So elated that Avree is doing better. I had the good fortune to know Avree and Rose through Earth Care and teaching at Monte. I was so looking forward to working with Avree and Rose on a Wilderness backpacking club we were plotting for Monte and several schools. Maybe this will happen still. I know Avree is a strong young woman and will probably carry on her endeavors in saving the planet and bettering the world and it will be even more significant carrying on Rose’s legacy as well. I saw them on Friday at summer school and we laughed about quitting smoking, starting good habits and programs at Monte in the Fall. I will miss the click of Rose’s high heels in the courtyard and the way those two loved each other, but I know that Avree, with her fierce love for Rose and the Earth, will carry that torch and illuminate our lives and the world even brighter than before. She is a true lover of life and will fight for the lives of others less fortunate. So thankful that she is still with us. Tammy Harkins
