Slides: Gangs of Santa Fe (On MySpace)

This week, SFR reveals that Santa Fe’s gang turf has spread to the Web with more than 60 youths openly declaring gang affiliation on their MySpace pages ["Gang Sign of the Times"]. The Web is naturally ephemeral and, no doubt, many of these pages will change or switch to private.
This slide show of screen captures and photo downloads illustrates the prevalence of gangs in Santa Fe, particularly on the West Side, the territory claimed by Barrio West Side, West Side Locos and Mann St.

After the jump is a list of gangs and cliques documented by the Santa Fe Police Department’s Gang Unit.
Documented mainstay gangs in the
Santa Fe Metro area
- West Side Locos 13; primary area, Hopewell, Mann, and St. Michaels drive
- Mann Street 13; a clique of WSL 13
- Barrio West Side; primary area, everything west of north Saint Francis up to Osage Avenue.
- APT (Alto Park Thugs); Clique of Barrio West Side
- West Side 700 Block; Primary area 700 Block of Alameda and San Francisco Streets.
- Sureno 13; Primary area, Airport Road, Jaguar Drive, are known to frequent areas all over Santa Fe
- MLC (Mexican Locos Clique); Clique of Sur 13.
- MCK (Mexican Clique Killers); Clique of Sur 13.
- VGS (Vagos); used to clique up with Sur 13, but have since started their own street presence in the Espinacitas and Third Street areas. They are also based out of California.
- SSL 13; Primary area Highway 14, have committed numerous crimes in the City of Santa Fe to include robbery and murder.
- Latin Kings; don’t really have a specific area of turf but have engaged in several incidents in the Airport Road corridor. Founding members are from the Chicago area.
- La Raza; clique of the Latin Kings.
- Raza 13; primary area Airport Road
- Juggalos and Juggalettes; are the very true followers and fans of the Insane Clown Posse. Are documented as a national gang. Members have been found wearing clown make up and carrying hatchets. Unknown number in Santa Fe.
- Norte 14; Primary area Airport Road.
- North Side Locos; Primary area of Chimayo and Espanola, do frequent the downtown area of Santa Fe, and have committed numerous crimes in the City of Santa Fe.
- VL 13 (Vatos Locos 13); primary area Airport Road.
- Riverside Locos; Primary area Riverside Mobile home park
- Tierra Block; Primary area Tierra Real Mobile home park
- Santa Boyz; Located sporadically around Santa Fe.
- SBC (Santa Boys Crew); Primary area El Dorado and the East side of Santa Fe
- 201 Crew; clique of SBC
- BTR Crew ( Big Time Racks) Tagging Crew
- Bandidos; Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang, does have two Santa Fe Chapters.

It used to be two gangs in SF. Now there are over a dozen. We can thank the Mayor’s and councilors who voted for sanctuary city status for this nightmare. Once, again, the unintended consequences of a good deed gone wrong. You can also bet that a bunch of these gangbangers were a product of our public schools. Look at the SFPS……what a failure and 8-0% of the kids speak Spanish. We are a city that is like a miniature version of Mexico.

um, that wasn’t my comment by the way. I’m not even gonna dignify the first commenter with a justifiably preachy — if not vitriolic — response. But I will say this: The gang bangers living in my neighborhood, and even on my street, are AMERICAN-BORN ADULTS who speak English and have high school diplomas. One of the reasons some of these kids feel marginalized is because … well…we marginalize them. To no end. As a former youth-gang mediator in Seattle, I can also say that some folks may complain that putting the names and actions of gangs out there actually empowers the gangs. It doesn’t, really. In fact, ignoring them only emboldens many them further, especially the younger members. And until the public takes grasp of how broad the gang situation is in their community, they will continue to act incredulous when en they read in print what is in front of their own eyes every waking moment. All you have to do is look. And not look away.

I was young, too…18. Going to the University of Washington. As part of the S.H.A.R.P. community (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice), I ran into some interesting folks on the street. One of them was “Thomas R,” the son of a Black Panther activist, who fell in with the Black Gangster Disciples. THomas’s father was serving a life sentence, and THomas was trying to dig his way out of the BGD by becoming a dancer. My partner and I had regular jobs and an apartment, but we were street punks, for long stretches, living in squats. We befriended Thomas after he was beaten by racist skinheads who had migrated from Vancouver, BC. When BGD got word, they came to us, and we sat down to set some boundaries and offer advice on protection in the streets for Thomas. It was an endless cycle of violence — most of it driven by race and territory — but what we found was, working with younger members of the gangs AND the skins, there was more good to be had by having a third party who didn’t wear a badge. I have NEVER heard of gang mediation in this town. Sure, gangs still exist in Seattle, but there are people on the street level trying to make the peace…bridge the cultural gap. If you want to affect change in Santa Fe, in terms of gangs, mediation is gonna be key.

I left for Olympia, Wa. in 1990, after my partner was attacked in our home by a racist skinhead. We continued mediation with BGD, but there was a lack of trust from law enforcement. We were, effectively, meddling, they said. Last I heard, Thomas left the street life. He died of an aneurysm less than six months ago, but he was out of the gang environment when he did.
I’m not sure about Romero’s track record with mediation in relation to gangs. I DO know that, as far back as 1999, the New Mexico Center for Dispute Resolution provided training publications for school-based gang mediation involving parents and teachers. But I haven’t heard of any street-level mediation, that is, outside the school system, in Santa Fe. THe SFPD Gang Unit may have mediators, but I’m not sure if they’re private contractors, or trained officers. Interestingly, following the shooting at Dennys in ALB recently, Lt. Rob Smith, the head of the ALB Gang unit, said this about the MS-13 gang, which is implicated in the violent crime:
“The game plan is zero tolerance – step on ‘em and squash ‘em. That’s what they deserve, that’s where we’re at with this gang right now.” It’s hard to affect mediation between gangs, and between gangs and law enforcement, when men in a place of authority reduce the problem — I mean the solution — to outright extermination.

So we marginalize them? Who, precisely, is “we”? What, precisely, have I been doing as I work, pay my bills, raise my kids, mind my own business, that has been at least in part responsible for these adult U.S. citizens with high school diplomas choosing to live a life of crime?

By we, Brigette, I was talking about the media and the law enforcement community. But to be sure, looking the other way as a whole community is also part of the problem. I suppose, however, that for some people, looking the other way and pretending the problem doesn’t exist gives them some peace of mind and a bloated sense of self-importance within the community. So yaay.

It’s a disgrace that alot of these young kids or older “gang members” are of Mexican, Hispanic or Latin decent. At least it appears that way on their myspace pages. They USE our spanish minority name to show pride but it just gives us a BAD name. We are better than that. If they want to use our spanish name they should use it in a better way than down grading who we are by causing trouble. The only way to show it is not to hurt each other, you should be united to do your community some good. Volunteer, help those in need, improve the areas you live in and don’t let it look like a trashed dump. Use your big gang group to do something good. That will show that the spanish minority group is worth sticking up for and something to REALLY be proud of.

I am with Brigette, I do exactly the same thing, work, pay my bills, try to raise my son right. Why shouldn’t I look the other way, why should they be my problem to fix. Violence is learned, they have learned this way of life and could have chosen another path. I very much doubt most of them have high school diplomas. Also because I have the intelligence to live my life without violence and fighting and choose not to make these gangs my problem I have a bloated sense of self-importance—How does that even make sense? Also as an FYI, I grew up in a very large extended family with violence and poverty, my parents choose to work thier butts off and try to show me a different way of life, way different than how many of my aunts and uncles were choosing to raise thier children. Huh, funny, under the circumstances I have grown into a responsible adult, I am not in a gang and I hold a Master’s degree—funny how you can change life if you choose to.

Well, to play devil’s advocate, what about as a public safety issue: You’ve got kids who go to school who may encounter gang violence or drugs; you’ve got homes and cars that could be the subject to theft or vandalism. Now, you could ignore it, but eventually it will affect you, whether personally with a carjacking or indirectly with a downtown smeared with graffiti or home values that kerplunk because it’s not a safe place to live.
The question is: Do you step up and try to address the problem personally…or do you just dump it in the hands of government?
I know Brigette’s a conservative…. what’s better, taking personal responsibility or bigger government?
Again, this isn’t a personal opinion, just a question I’m tossing out there.

I’m actually surprised and disgusted that some of the posters here refuse to look outside their comfortable lives and realize that some kids need a hand, some guidance, some mentorship. Not everyone is provided the same opportunities in this life, no matter how much self-esteem they harbor. And you would think someone with a Master’s degree might have learned a little bit about the real world outside the Ivory Tower as an adult in order to earn the title.
I pay my bills, I help raise kids that aren’t even mine, and still find time to try to be a part of the solution to the violence that surrounds us every day. It might not be at arm’s length, but it’s there, and every time someone turns their back on the “problem,” it gets worse. We certainly don’t need bigger government to confront the issue, but we certainly don’t need the mindset of “me and mine and that’s all there is,” either. I’d rather die in the gutter shaking the hand of promise than living in a palace with the empty embrace of regret. That’s what separates people who care about people, and people who only care about themselves. Which one do you want to be?
