Happy Nuke Day

“‘Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.’ I suppose we all felt that one way or another.” – Dr. J Robert Oppenheimer.

Sixty-four years ago today, the Atomic Age began with the Trinity nuclear test near Alamogordo.

Also, watch the powerful documentary, The Day After Trinity. There’s a trailer on YouTube:

I find it interesting that although Alamogordo was used as the address for the first nuclear detonation, the test was in Socorro County and a mere 30 or so miles from San Antonio. Not much has been written about the civilian witnesses – in San Antonio and Socorro – of the blast. Many are still living and have personal recollections of that morning, and of the Army presence in that community.

That’s really interesting. Can you put me in touch with some? (davem [at] sfreporter.com)
