Summer is great. Everybody knows this. But sometimes the late sunsets can make the day drag on, trapping one between the end of work and the end of the day. Fortunately, there is a fun solution: The Santa Fe Reporter Block Party!

Join us to celebrate the release of Summer Guide 2010 and get your party on!

Mingle with all your fellow Santa Feans at the profusion of fasinating booths: Big Sky Learning, the Green Party of Santa Fe, Warehouse 21, SpaNomad, and so many many more. Or, if you’d rather, just listen to some great music: La Junta plays ‘Southwest funk hop,’ the Rev. Karol King Kong brings the funk, Venus Bogardus plays post-punk and the Felonious Groove Foundation plays their own funk. Food is provided by Backroad Pizza, Cowgirl BBQ, ECCO and Second Street brewery. Plus there’s a performance by the Santa Fe Spirit All Star cheerleaders!

There’s no excuse for a boring summer day when there are block parties to go to!

SFR rocks AAN awards

I returned on Monday from five days in sunny (which is to say disgustingly hot) Tucson, Arizona, where I was attending the annual AAN convention, and learning all sorts of things about emerging (and existing) technology, and hashing out the future of alt.weeklies. I also ran for the board of AAN and won (of course, I was unopposed) and now serve as that board’s editorial chair (which means I can help shape, hopefully, some of its programming and services in the coming year).
But perhaps the best part of the trip was SFR’s showing at the annual awards ceremony. We won four first place awards, the most first places of any paper in our size category (and we tied with LA Weekly, which had the most first place awards in the large paper category).
Firsts were won by Angela Moore for cover design, Richard Borge in illustration, Dave Maass, Ursula Coyote and random Zombie fans for our Halloween Zombie issue (I’ll include myself in that, since I did contribute a video) and Dave Maass and staff for our former blog, Swing State of Mind. We also won a third place award for A Qasimi’s food writing and an honorable mention for our Devour, Locavore’s Guide to Santa Fe issue.

Eyedropper: SFR Block Party Edition

This is a very special edition of the Eyedropper. We brought our cameras along for SFR’s 35th Anniversary Summer Blast Block Party at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, where there was so much to see. If you weren’t there, you should have been. Try harder next time. Here’s the best of what you missed.

Here we have Zane and Corey Hula-hooping. I am simultaneously taking this picture with my camera phone and whooping the hell out of them in our Hula-hoop contest.

Here the dog that lives with me (right) is whooping me with his Hula-hoop skills. He will not be fed anytime soon.

Here we have a baby, not drinking. Although I can’t speak for whether it wants to or not.

Contrary to what editor Julia Goldberg says, the Eyedropper is nice and kind. She loves dancing and she especially loves people who dance without shame. The Eyedropper picked the top four best dancers at our 35th Anniversary Blast, although there were many, many excellent dancers in the running.

Seemingly taking his cue from my awesome Hula-hooping skillz, the third-place best dancer rotates around (and around) the dance floor with the best of ‘em.

Second place is a tie between a gypsy couple and a man wearing a Hawaiian shirt. Let it suffice that both acts are indescribably good. The man wearing a Hawaiian shirt video gives a preview of SFR’s No. 1 Best Block Party Dancer, so look out.

Finally, we have the winner. 1,000 points goes to you, tiny baby girl dancer. Who are your parents? Or where are they? Never change baby dancer. You roll on the ground with the best of ‘em.

As has been surely evidenced by the above, the 35th Anniversary Block Party was the best ever. You should be ashamed if you missed it. Ashamed.
